Beta Club News
Welcome to the informational meeting about Beta Club. We are glad to have over 120 returning members of the club, and we hope that all of the 300+ eligible juniors and seniors will join us too. It is easy to become a member. Sponsors of the club are Aimee Cogdill an Claudia Seals; both can be found in lower 1. Also, the senior officers welcome you- President Logan McDaniel; Senior Secretary Casey Smith. Just follow the procedures below if you wish to join. First, here is a little history about our Beta Club.
Jefferson County High School is considered the oldest Beta Club in the state because we were given the charter from Maury High School when the four high schools in the county were combined. Maury High School had the first Beta Club in the state of Tennessee; therefore, we now make this claim with their charter. Beta Club is an honor society, but it is also a service organization. The motto is "Let us lead by serving others." Our club does projects throughout the year that require much help from the members.
The National Beta Club charges $13 for membership an JCHS charges $7. NONE of the money is kept because after the $13 is sent to National Beta Club, the remaining $7 is spent to purchase the Beta tassel to be worn at graduation. You will receive a Beta magazine, a certificate of membership, a membership pin, and a seal for your diploma denoting membership in Beta. Once the $20 is paid, you are a member for 2 years. You never have to pay your dues again. Just remember, you are not officially a member until the dues have been paid.
Each member is asked to complete 10 service projects during the two years he/she is a member. A list of projects will be provided at each meeting, and at times extra projects will be announced on WJCH. If you complete the 10 required projects, your tassel will be placed in your graduation packet. This is just our way of making sure that every member is ACTIVE and not just a member in name only.
If you wish to become a member, please see a sponsor, Aimee Cogdill or Claudia Seals, in lower 1 before or after school, during break, during second period, or during lunch. If you write a check, make it payable to JCHS. You will be given a receipt.
PROJECTS
Yard Sale- Anyone interested in helping set up a yard sale for the Jefferson City Presbyterian Church during the weekend of Old Time Saturday, October 7, should see Mrs. Cogdill or Mrs. Seals for further details. You will receive 1 project point for each hour you help.
Samaritan House- We have adopted the Samaritan House in Jefferson City as a yearlong project. Each 9 weeks we will have items that can be brought in for project credit that will be delivered to the Samaritan House. These weeks they are in desperate need of nonperishable food. As of right now, their supply of food is very low. You will receive 1 project point for each set of 5 items brought in. These cans can be fruit or vegetables, canned meat, macaroni/cheese boxes, or peanut butter. Please bring these to lover pod 1, sign the sheet on the student desk next to Mrs. Seals' desk, and place the cans in the box provided.
Campbell's Soup Labels- We will be collecting Campbell's food labels all year. You may bring 25 labels from any Campbell's products (see attached list) and place them in the container under the student desk beside Mrs. Seals' desk in the work area of lower pod 1. Make sure you sign your name and the number of labels you brought. These are given to the Samaritan House in their quest to purchase a van with them. You will receive one project point for each set of 25 labels.
Safe Space- We will be collecting old cell phones for Safe Space to use. This organization is a shelter for abused women; therefore, there is a need for emergency cell phones. Bring all old cell phones and any of the accessories that go with them to lower pod 1, sign the sheet on the student desk beside Mrs. Seals' desk, and place the items in the appropriate box.
Box tops For Education- Maury Middle School has asked to save the General Mills Box tops for Education to help their yearbook staff purchase much needed equipment. Below is an example of what these look like. You will receive 1 project point for each 10 box tops brought in. Bring them to lower pod 1, place in the basket on Mrs. Cogdill's desk, and sign the appropriate sheet.
Food City Receipts- We will be collecting Food City receipts as soon as Food City begins issuing the special receipts that can be redeemed for school items. You will receive 3 project points for each set of $1000 worth of labels turned in. Bring the labels to the lower pod 1 work area and place the labels on Mrs. Cogdill's desk. MAKE SURE YOU SIGN THE SHEET AND RECORD THE DOLLAR AMOUNT TURNED IN.
Homecoming- Anyone interested in representing Beta Club during homecoming activities should sign up at the front. There will be special events and activities, and when these are announced, you will be contacted as to what you would like to do. LISTEN for details concerning projects that will become available, and see a sponsor if you are willing to participate.
Wrapping Christmas Shoeboxes- There is a need for EMPTY wrapped shoeboxes at area churches who have older people who cannot wrap the boxes but are willing to fill them. You will receive 1 project point for every 3 boxes wrapped. See Mrs. Seals if you need paper. Bring these to lower one and sign the appropriate sheet on the desk next to Mrs. Seals' desk. Leave boxes beside desk.
Christmas Shoeboxes- We will be preparing shoeboxes full of goodies to be sent to nearby children overseas. Please follow the guidelines for preparing these. 1) Choose a shoe box and wrap the lid and the box separately. 2) Determine whether your box will be for a girl or a boy and choose an age category--2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. 3) Fill the box with small toys, such as cars, stuffed animals, yo-yos, slinkies, etc., or hygiene items, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soap, washcloths, etc., or other items such as hard candy, mints, gum, sunglasses, flashlights with extra batteries, socks, hair clips, jewelry, etc. 4) DO NOT INCLUDE TOY GUNS, KNIVES OR OTHER WAR RELATED ITEMS, CHOCOLATE OR PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS, LIQUIDS OF ANY KIND, MEDICINES OF ANY KIND OR BREAKABLE ITEMS. 5) Bring shoeboxes to lower pod 1, pick up a label for your box and place it on the outside, designating it as a girl or boy's box.
You may work together on this with another Beta member. You will receive 2 points for each shoebox you fill and wrap. Bring boxes to lower pod 1, sign the sheet on the student desk and put shoeboxes under desk. THESE MUST BE IN BY NOVEMBER 7 in order for them to be shipped in time for Christmas, so that is why we are starting NOW. If we wait until our next meeting, we won't have much time.
Thank you for helping with these projects. We are only successful when everyone participates.
DON'T FORGET TO PAY YOUR DUES IF YOU WANT TO BECOME A NEW MEMBER.
